It is alleged that this act of killing dogs has been done at the behest of some elected public representatives including the Sarpanch. It is being said that this step was taken to deal with the problem of stray dogs as part of the promises made to the villagers before the Gram Panchayat elections held in December. The latest case came to light on January 22 from Pegadapalli village, where a complaint was lodged that 300 stray dogs were killed by giving poisonous injections. In the complaint, the village sarpanch and gram panchayat secretary have been held responsible for this heinous act. It has been alleged that the Sarpanch had assigned the task to some people to kill stray dogs. Police said on Saturday that based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered against both of them under relevant sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Inspector C. Kiran said that during the investigation, the bodies of about 70 to 80 dogs were taken out from the grave. Initially it has come to light that he was buried about three to four days ago. “At this stage we cannot confirm the involvement of the accused in the incident,” he said. He said that the post mortem report is awaited and investigation into the matter is ongoing. In January itself, several incidents of killing of stray dogs have come to light in the state. According to another complaint lodged by animal rights activists, 100 dogs were allegedly poisoned to death in Yacharam village near Hyderabad on January 19, though 50 dead dogs were recovered from the spot. Earlier this month, police registered a case against nine people, including two women sarpanches and their husbands, for the alleged killing of around 300 stray dogs in Shyamapet and Arepalli villages in Hanamkonda district.
