Tailor could not deliver blouse on time, court imposed fine of Rs 7,000

Ahmedabad. A tailor’s broken promise caused him a loss of Rs 7,000 as he could not deliver the blouse on time for the marriage. The incident turned a happy family function into a consumer court case. The consumer court has imposed a fine of Rs 7,000 on the tailor.

A female customer from Ahmedabad had placed an order for a traditional blouse to be stitched for her relative’s wedding on 24 December 2024. He had given ₹4,395 in advance to the tailor last month itself. But when she went to collect the order on December 14, she found that the blouse was not stitched as per the design specified by her. The tailor assured her that he would rectify the mistake, but December 24 passed and the blouse was never received.

The woman then sent a legal notice to the tailor, filed a consumer complaint but the tailor did not appear before the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Ahmedabad (Additional). The commission considered the tailor’s non-delivery of the blouse as a “clear deficiency in service” which caused the complainant to suffer “mental harassment”. The court ordered that the tailor return the amount of Rs 4,395 with 7% annual interest, and also pay additional compensation for mental agony and litigation expenses.
