
53rd Chief Justice of India: Justice Surya Kant of the Supreme Court took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India today, Monday (24 November 2025). Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Draupadi Murmu. Greeted with a hug and greeting from former Chief Justice BR Gavai during the oath taking ceremony.
Chief Justices and Supreme Court judges of Bhutan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal and Sri Lanka attended the swearing-in ceremony of CJI Justice Surya Kant. This is the first time that so many foreign judicial delegations were present at the swearing-in ceremony of an Indian CJI. The tenure of CJI Surya Kant will be till 9 February 2027. That means he will remain on the post of CJI only for 15 months.
These big cases will be before CJI
During the tenure of about 15 months of CJI Surya Kant, many big cases will come up, which include SIR, Waff, Pollution, Talaq-e-Hassan. It will be a big challenge for them to take decisions in these matters. Because protests have started in many places regarding issues like SIR. Apart from this, whether it is Delhi’s pollution or the Waqf Act, both are a big challenge for them.
CJI Surya Kant played role in many big decisions
Justice Surya Kant has played a role in many important decisions in his career, including those related to abrogation of Article 370, democracy, corruption, freedom of expression, gender equality and environment. Apart from this, he has taken many historic decisions, which will be remembered. Justice Surya Kant had directed to reserve one-third seats for women in bar associations including the Supreme Court Bar Association. To maintain transparency in the election process, it was he who had asked the Election Commission to provide the data of voter list names after SIR in Bihar. Apart from this, Justice Surya Kant was part of the seven-judge bench, which had rejected the Aligarh Muslim University decisions of 1967.
More than 20 years of experience as a judge
Justice Surya Kant is a resident of Hisar district of Haryana. He did his post-graduation in law from Kurukshetra University and reached the Supreme Court after serving as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. He has more than two decades of experience working as a judge.
