
CJI Gavai’s tenure completed
New Delhi. CJI BR Gabai’s tenure has been completed on Sunday evening, now on Monday Justice Surya Kant will take oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. Justice Surya Kant has been a part of several landmark judgments and orders, ranging from the abrogation of Article 370 and the thorough revision of Bihar voter list to the Pegasus spyware case.
It is noteworthy that on October 30, Justice Surya Kant was appointed as the next CJI. After taking oath, Justice Surya Kant will remain on this post for about 15 months. Along with this, he will retire on February 09, 2027 on attaining the age of 65 years. Justice Surya Kant was born in Hisar district of Haryana on February 10, 1962 in a middle-class family. He also has the distinction of obtaining ‘First in Class’ post graduation in Law from Kurukshetra University in the year 2011. Justice Surya Kant has risen from a small-town lawyer to the highest judicial post in the country. The special thing is that he has been a part of many decisions and orders on national importance and constitutional matters. Justice Surya Kant, who has given many notable judgments in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was appointed the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018. Apart from this, his tenure as a Supreme Court judge is especially known for the decisions related to the removal of Article 370, freedom of expression and citizenship rights. Justice Surya Kant will take over as CJI on Monday and will replace BR Gavai.
