Mumbai . The fourth indigenous Advanced Stealth Frigate ‘Taragiri’ of the Nilgiri class (Project 17A) was commissioned into the Indian Navy’s fleet on Friday at Mazagon Dock Ship Building Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
The ship is one of the three P17A ships built by Dock Ship Building Limited and is an important milestone in the indigenous warship construction of the Indian Navy. ‘Taragiri’ has been developed as a redesign of the earlier INS Taragiri, which was part of the Indian Navy from 1980 to 2013. This new frigate is equipped with stealth technology, high firepower and advanced automation.
Let us tell you that this ship, designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and monitored by the Mumbai-based Warship Overseeing Team, is being seen as a symbol of self-reliance in shipbuilding. This P17A class ship includes indigenous ship design, stealth capability and modern combat systems.
It has BrahMos SSM, MFStar radar, medium range surface-to-air missile system and a variety of weapons such as 76 mm, SRGM, 30 mm and 12.7 mm close-in weapon systems. Also, the ship is equipped with rockets and torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare. Additionally, its propulsion system is based on CODOG (Combined Diesel or Gas) technology, which consists of a diesel engine and gas turbine.
