
Konasima. A massive gas leak occurred from an operational oil well of ONGC in Rajole area of Konaseema district of Andhra Pradesh on Monday. The incident occurred when repair work was going on in the well. Seeing the situation, the administration evacuated three nearby villages as a precautionary measure. According to information, production from the oil well was temporarily stopped and repairs were being done through a workover rig. During this time, suddenly there was a strong blowout and gas and crude oil started flowing upwards vigorously. Within a short time, the leaked gas caught fire and high flames started rising near the well.
According to officials, thick clouds of gas and smoke spread over Irusumanda and surrounding areas, creating a smog-like atmosphere in the entire area. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, the administration appealed to the people through loudspeakers to keep the electric switches off, not to light the gas stove and not to use any electronic device. As soon as information about the incident was received, ONGC teams reached the spot and started efforts to control the gas leak and fire. The entire area has been cordoned off and sealed. Senior district officials and ONGC officials are present at the spot and the situation is being continuously monitored.
