Hearing continues in Supreme Court on Bengal SIR case, Mamata present

A hearing is being held in the Supreme Court today regarding the special intensive revision of the voter list in West Bengal. During this time, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself is present among the lawyers. The case is being heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi. While hearing the case, the Chief Justice said that he received information from two of his fellow judges of West Bengal, who explained the process of issuing pass certificates and based on this understanding, this issue was included. Senior advocate Shyam Diwan, who represented CM Mamata Banerjee in the case, said that the court had earlier directed to display the list of logical inconsistencies.

32 lakh voters not listed – Bengal government

Advocate Shyam Dewan urged the court to consider the brief note of the petitioner and pointed out that only four days are left to complete the process. He said 32 lakh voters are not enumerated, 1.36 crore names are in the logical discrepancy list, and 63 lakh cases are still pending hearing. He also informed that 8,300 micro observers have been appointed, which is not a category envisaged under the Constitution. Diwan further said that many approved documents including residence certificate, Aadhar and OBC certificates are being rejected, forcing people to stand in queues for four to five hours.

Demand to cancel ECI orders related to SIR

In her petition, trained advocate Mamata Banerjee has sought quashing of all SIR related orders and instructions issued by the Election Commission on June 24, 2025 and October 27, 2025. He has also filed a mandamus petition to direct the Election Commission to conduct the upcoming assembly elections on the basis of the unchanged 2025 voter list. They argue that the SIR’s reliance on the 2002 basic list and its difficult verification process is a threat to the voting rights of genuine voters.
