Emphasizing on the increasing number of RuPay debit cards, Shah told the National Conference on Combating Cyber Fraud and Disrupting the Ecosystem organized by CBI in New Delhi that the number of RuPay debit cards has reached 39 crore 81 lakh, and by December 2026 this figure is expected to cross about 50 crore.
Home Minister Shah also told that earlier about 60 crore people in the country belonged to such families who did not have even a single bank account. But, by February 2026, more than 57 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened.
He said, “I4C, state police forces, CBI, National Investigation Agency (NIA), Enforcement Directorate (ED), Department of Telecommunications, banking sector, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and judiciary are together making every possible effort to stop cyber crimes.”
He emphasized that every institution has an important role and responsibility, and close coordination among all stakeholders is necessary to achieve the targeted results. Shah said, “This initiative of CBI and I4C is very important, it will help in connecting different government departments and agencies with each other and implement their efforts effectively, which will hopefully lead to success.”
The Union Minister further said that the journey of ‘Digital India’ in the last 11 years has been wonderful. He said, “11 years ago, there were only 25 crore internet users in the country, whereas today India has more than 1 billion internet users, and the country has reached new heights in the digital domain. Broadband connections have increased almost 16 times and have also crossed the 1 billion mark.”
Amit Shah said that the price of one gigabyte (GB) of data has reduced by 97 percent, due to which both internet access and usage have increased significantly. He said that the increase in the number of internet users and the connection of Parliament and Panchayats through BharatNet is a major success of Digital India. The Union Home Minister said that 11 years ago only 546 rural panchayats were connected under the BharatNet project, whereas today more than two lakh rural panchayats have been connected to this project.
“There has been tremendous growth in UPI transactions, which shows that in 2024 alone, there will be more than 181 billion digital transactions in India, with a total value of more than Rs 233 trillion,” Shah said.
According to the Union Home Minister, comparison of digital transactions was not possible before the launch of UPI, but in 2024, more than 181 billion digital transactions took place. The security of these transactions depends on a strong system which is continuously being strengthened.
He said, “If we look at it from a global perspective, India has created new records in digital transactions and every second digital transaction in the world is happening in India. This shows the need to further strengthen and secure the country’s digital payment ecosystem at the global level.”
