Dabrugarh. Former Assam Congress Chief Bhupen Bora has joined BJP amid much speculation. He took membership of BJP in the presence of Assam BJP Chief Dilip Saikia and BJP MP Baijayant Panda. A day earlier, Bora had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Bora had met Shah in the presence of Assam CM Himanta Vishwa Sarma, Baijayant Panda and Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka. After the meeting, Bora told reporters that CM Sarma had asked him to meet Shah, so he had come to pay him a courtesy call.
He claimed that by March 8, about 50 percent of Congress members who have self-respect and nationalist feelings towards the state will join BJP. However, he joined the BJP on Sunday, 22 February. Bora had resigned from Congress last Monday. However, the party high command did not accept this and senior leaders came to meet him at his residence. Rahul Gandhi also spoke to him on phone. Senior Congress leaders had asked Bora to reconsider his decision, but the next day Assam CM Sarma reached his residence and announced that Bora would join BJP on February 22.
