New Delhi. Supreme Court Judge BV Nagarathna has advised the judges to stick to their decisions. He has said that one should not hesitate in taking the right decision under any pressure. She was speaking at the second TS Krishnamurthy Iyer Memorial Lecture held at the Kerala High Court. Earlier he had said similar thing about the media also. He had said that media cannot play its role in any kind of obstruction, fear or influence. According to media reports, on Tuesday Justice Nagarathna said that judges should not hesitate in taking the right decision. Even if because of this their progress stops or people in power get angry. He said that a judge should remain free from political pressure, institutional intimidation or popular demand. He had said that behind the recent attempts to capture the press, there are not only economic grounds but also political aspects.
The special thing is that Justice Nagarathna will become the first woman Chief Justice of India in September 2027. Justice Nagarathna clearly said that the media can do its work properly only when it is free from any kind of fear or pressure. He said that in today’s era, the biggest threat to the freedom of the press does not come from direct restrictions. Rather, the real threat lies in economic policies, strict licensing rules and ownership of media companies. He said that a media establishment can be legally free to criticize the government, yet be economically constrained in such a way that such criticism becomes costly.
He said that this right emerges from the interplay between the freedom of speech and expression and the freedom to practice any profession or carry on any profession, trade or business. Justice Nagarathna, the chief guest of the program, said that the Constitution protects the freedom of the press in India in two different ways. He emphasized how important independent media is for democracy.
Judges should not hesitate in taking the right decision under any pressure.
