Bulldozer action near Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque in Delhi at midnight, stones pelted at police in protest, tension in the area.

New Delhi: Delhi Municipal Corporation launched a major anti-encroachment campaign early today in the Turkman Gate area near Ramlila Maidan. 17 bulldozers and heavy police force were used in this action taken after strict instructions of Delhi High Court.

Let us tell you that usually such actions start after 8 am, but considering security reasons and possible protests, the administration started it at 1:30 am. The main target of the operation was to demolish a community hall (baraat ghar), dispensary and some commercial structures built illegally on the land of Ramlila Maidan and near Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque.

Stones pelted at police, situation tense

As soon as the bulldozers started demolishing the illegal structures, local residents protested strongly. The situation became tense when some mischievous elements started pelting stones at the police and corporation personnel. There is news of 5 policemen being injured in this clash. Police had to use mild force and release tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Before the encroachment removal operation, several coordination meetings were held with Aman Committee members and other local stakeholders with the aim of maintaining peace and preventing any untoward incident. All possible preventive and confidence-building measures were taken. During removal of encroachment, some miscreants tried to create disturbance by pelting stones. The situation was quickly controlled, with limited and minimal use of force, ensuring that normalcy was restored without any further escalation.
