New Delhi . Chandratal situated in Lahaul Valley of Himachal Pradesh is no less than a paradise for you. If you are fond of traveling and want to experience the untouched beauty of the mountains away from the crowd, then definitely visit here once. Situated at an altitude of about 14,100 feet above sea level, this lake attracts travelers from all over the world due to its supernatural beauty and mysterious atmosphere. This lake, spread in a crescent shape amidst high snow-clad mountains, appears as if nature has carved it with great care and love. The name Chandratal in itself describes its identity. Made up of ‘Chandra’ and ‘Taal’, the name reflects the moon-like shape of this lake and its calm, gentle aura. As soon as we reach here, time seems to stop.
The silence spread all around, the rustling of cool winds and the reflection of the mountains in the water of the lake create a scene which looks no less than a painting. This place is as beautiful as it is mysterious, which leaves a deep impression in the mind of every traveller. The most special thing about this lake is its color changing water. The minerals present in the streams coming from the glaciers and the different angles of sunlight together create such a magic that the color of the lake keeps changing throughout the day. In the morning its water looks light blue, in the strong afternoon sunlight it turns into bright turquoise and by evening it starts spreading a shade of dark green. It feels as if the lake is communicating with the sky and absorbing every color of it within itself. For scientists, it is a very sensitive ecosystem, while the local people consider it to be the abode of the gods. Chandratal is also linked to mythology.
It is believed that during the Mahabharata period, Pandavas’ eldest brother Yudhishthir was taken to heaven by the king of gods Indra in his chariot from this place. According to another folklore, the Moon God and an Apsara are found here even today. Perhaps this is the reason that when the moonlight falls on the water of the lake on a full moon night, the view here gives the feeling of a different world. Reaching Chandratal is also an exciting journey in itself. The journey from Manali to Batal via Atal Tunnel and Gramphu exposes the travelers to the real challenge of the Himalayas. Beyond Batal, there is a rough and difficult road of about 14 kilometers to the parking lot of the lake, where normal vehicles cannot ply and only strong vehicles can reach.
