New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for 2026-27 today. This will be a historic moment because for the first time in the history of independent India it is being presented on Sunday. This will be her ninth consecutive budget, making her the first woman finance minister to achieve this feat. This will be the 15th budget of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is also the second full budget after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returns to power for the third consecutive time in 2024. The FY27 Budget comes at a time when complexities for the Indian economy have increased even as domestic demand remains strong and inflation has come down from recent highs. The global environment remains very uncertain. Geopolitical tensions, volatile commodity prices, uneven monetary easing by major central banks and increasing trade fragmentation continue to weigh on future prospects. Adding to this challenge is the punitive 50 percent tariff imposed on Indian goods by US President Donald Trump, which has destabilized the financial markets.
