From Sanjay Gandhi to YSR, know the major events

Plane Crash: Many incidents of death of politicians in plane crashes have come to light in the country and the world, which shocked both politics and the public. Recently, the news of death of five people including Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar in a plane crash created a sensation. The plane was going from Mumbai to Baramati and crashed during landing at around 8:45 am, killing all the passengers.

Sanjay Gandhi’s name is included among the first big leaders to lose their lives in a plane crash in India. Sanjay Gandhi, younger son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was fond of flying planes. On June 23, 1970, while flying in Delhi, his plane crashed and he died in this accident.

After this, on September 30, 2001, the plane of senior Congress leader Madhavraj Scindia crashed near Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh. All seven people on board the plane died in this accident.

On 3 March 2002, Lok Sabha Speaker Dr. G.M.C. Balayogi also became a victim of the plane crash. He lost his life in this crash in Andhra Pradesh. Whereas, on 2 September 2009, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) died when his helicopter crashed in a hilly area.

In recent years too, incidents of death of politicians in plane crashes have come to light. On June 12, 2025, former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani died in a plane crash while he was traveling from Ahmedabad to London.
