Google has begun rolling out a significant visual and functional overhaul for the Google Wallet app this April. Moving away from the long-standing “endless list” view, the 2026 update introduces a modern grid layout that allows users to see multiple cards and passes at a single glance. This redesign is specifically aimed at power users who store dozens of loyalty cards, boarding passes, and digital IDs, making navigation significantly faster.
The update introduces several highly requested organization tools. Users can now “star” their most-used cards to pin them at the top of the interface as Favorites. Furthermore, a new integrated search bar and advanced sorting options (by category or date added) have been implemented, finally bringing Google’s search expertise to its digital wallet. The detailed view for individual cards has also been refreshed, with colors and graphics taking center stage to make identification easier in a retail environment.
New Privacy and Permission Policies
Coinciding with the redesign, Google is enforcing a strict new Contacts Permission policy for all Android apps starting April 15, 2026. To enhance user privacy, apps that do not require broad access to a user’s entire contact list are now mandated to use the Android Contact Picker. This system ensures that an app can only access the specific contact a user selects, rather than the entire database. This move is part of a broader 2026 initiative to minimize unnecessary data collection across the Android ecosystem, giving users more granular control over what information they share with their installed applications.
