The condition of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and President of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Begum Khaleda Zia is critical. 80 year old Khaleda Zia is currently in a ‘very critical’ condition and doctors are constantly monitoring her. Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital last night after she suffered an acute chest infection, which affected both her heart and lungs. According to doctors, his condition has deteriorated rapidly. BNP general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said doctors told the family on Thursday night that his condition had become ‘extremely critical’. According to the report, he said, we are appealing for prayers from the entire country. Special prayers have been offered for Mother of Democracy Begum Zia in mosques across the country today. There is great concern among BNP workers about his health and many party leaders are present outside the hospital. Khaleda Zia has been suffering from serious health problems for the last several years. He has liver, kidney, diabetes, arthritis and eye related diseases. Doctors say that due to age and increasing complications his recovery is very slow.
Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus has also expressed deep concern over the health condition of Khaleda Zia. In a statement issued by his office, it was said that he is constantly taking updates from the doctors and he has instructed the officials that there should be no shortage of any kind in the treatment. Yunus said, Begum Zia is a great inspiration for the country in these difficult times. His good health is very important. His elder son and BNP working president Tariq Rehman has been living in London since 2008. His younger son Arfat Rehman died of a heart attack in 2025. At present only limited family members are in contact with the hospital during his treatment. On May 6 this year, Khaleda Zia returned to Dhaka after getting treatment from London. There she was on advanced medical treatment for four months. After his return, his health was said to be stable, but his condition suddenly deteriorated last week. The politics of Bangladesh is going through a very sensitive phase at the moment. Sheikh Hasina’s government fell following violent student-led protests in 2024 and BNP emerged as the dominant party in the new political landscape. Bangladesh elections may be held in February 2026. At such a time, the deteriorating condition of Khaleda Zia is being considered as a big blow for BNP and its supporters.
