New Delhi/London: An Indian student was stabbed to death in central England. The 30-year-old student was attacked with a knife on November 25. He later died in hospital due to serious injuries. West Mercia Police have appealed for any witnesses to the attack in Worcester earlier this week to come forward and provide information.
The British police have not yet formally revealed the identity of the deceased student. But in media reports in India, his name has been mentioned as Vijay Kumar Sheoran of Charkhi Dadri district of Haryana.
“A 30-year-old man was found by officers on Barbourne Road, Worcester, at around 4:15am on Tuesday morning (November 25) with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital but sadly died later the same day. Five people were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain on bail pending the investigation,” West Mercia Police in England said in a statement.
According to the police, a sixth person was also arrested on suspicion of murder, but he has been released without any further action.
West Mercia Detective Chief Inspector Lee Holehouse said the police’s thoughts were with the family and friends of the deceased student. He has also appealed for information. “For the past few days, my team has been conducting a massive investigation to find out what happened on Tuesday morning and what led to the loss of a person’s life,” the police officer said.
He said: “As part of these inquiries, police officers will be on Barbourne Road over the weekend, and I want to reassure the community that evidence gathering will continue and the public should not panic. “The five people arrested on suspicion of murder are now on bail and will continue to assist us in the investigation,” he said.
He said: “I would appeal to anyone who has any information which may assist our inquiries to please come forward, no matter how small it may seem to you; it could be vital information.”
Meanwhile, Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri MLA Sunil Satpal Sangwan expressed grief over the death of the student through social media and offered support to the family in this unbearable hour of grief. He said, “Deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Vijay Kumar Sheoran, village Jagarambas, district Charkhi Dadri (Haryana), who lost his life following a brutal stabbing incident in Worcester, UK.”
He said, “I have appealed to the Government of India to intervene as soon as possible and provide all possible help to the grieving family – especially to make arrangements for the immediate return of his mortal remains to India.” “We also call for a transparent, impartial and time-bound investigation so that justice is served and the culprits are held accountable,” he said.
