While the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max aren’t expected to debut until September, massive leaks from the supply chain suggest that Apple is preparing its most significant design and hardware overhaul in years.
The Death of the Large Dynamic Island
The most visual change coming to the iPhone 18 Pro is a drastically cleaner front display. According to multiple reports, Apple has successfully moved several Face ID components beneath the display panel. While a small, circular punch-hole will remain for the selfie camera, the intrusive “pill” shape of the Dynamic Island is expected to shrink by roughly 35%. This shift allows the screen-to-body ratio to reach nearly 98%, giving the Pro models a near-full-screen aesthetic that fans have been demanding for a decade.
Professional Optics: The Variable Aperture Era
For the first time in iPhone history, Apple is moving away from fixed-aperture lenses. Leaks from Korea’s ETNews indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro Max (and potentially the standard Pro) will feature a mechanical variable aperture system.
Similar to professional DSLR lenses, this will allow the camera to physically adjust how much light hits the sensor. In bright daylight, the lens can close down to improve sharpness and depth of field; in low light, it can open wider to pull in more data with less noise. This hardware leap is being paired with a new Samsung-made stacked sensor system, moving Apple closer to professional-grade photography.
