
New Delhi. Justice Surya Kant has today taken oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). His tenure as CJI will be for 15 months. He will replace CJI Bhushan R Gavai. President Draupadi Murmu has administered the oath of CJI to Justice Surya Kant.
CJI Bhushan R Gavai had put forward the name of Justice Surya Kant for the next CJI under Section 2 of Article 124 of the Constitution. The President has approved this and appointed Justice Surya Kant as the 53rd CJI of the country.
PM Modi was also present
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal were also present at the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Surya Kant held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Surya Kant was appointed CJI on 30 October 2025 and will hold the post till 9 February 2027.
Actually, CJI BR Gavai has completed 65 years, due to which he will now retire. In such a situation, before leaving the post of CJI, he continued the tradition of making the most senior judge of the Supreme Court the next CJI and chose Justice Surya Kant as his successor.
Be a part of many important decisions
Justice Surya Kant has been a part of the Supreme Court bench in many important decisions. From abrogation of Article 370 to hearing on SIR in Bihar, Justice Surya Kant has given many major decisions. He had ordered the Election Commission to release the list of 65 lakh voters removed during SIR.
First CJI of Haryana
Justice Surya Kant, born on 10 February 1962 in Hisar, Haryana, obtained a master’s degree from Kurukshetra University. He has been the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.
