Patna. Nitish Kumar, who took oath as the CM of Bihar 10 times, filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections 2026 on Thursday (5 March). During this, senior NDA leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah were present. After the results of the assembly elections last year, on February 27, Nitish Kumar took oath as CM for the 10th time. His decision to go to Rajya Sabha surprised everyone. Nitish Kumar is the Chief Minister of Bihar since 2005. Earlier, Nitish said that the new Chief Minister and the new government of the state will get his full support and guidance. He said, ‘For more than two decades you have consistently shown faith and support in me. With the strength of that belief, we have served Bihar and all of you with full devotion. With the power of your trust and support, today Bihar is presenting a new identity of development and dignity. Expressing his gratitude towards the people of the state, Kumar said that since the beginning of his parliamentary career, it has been his desire to become a member of both the houses of the Bihar Legislature as well as the Parliament.
What did Nitish Kumar say before nomination?
He said on social media ‘X’, ‘Keeping this aspiration in mind, I wish to become a member of Rajya Sabha in the elections to be held this time.’ He said, ‘I want to assure you with all sincerity that my relationship with you will continue in future also and my resolve to work together with you for building a developed Bihar will remain unwavering. The new government formed in the state will get my full support and guidance. After giving a massive victory to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2025 assembly elections, with Kumar leaving the post, there is a possibility of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader becoming the Chief Minister. If this happens, Bihar will get a BJP Chief Minister for the first time. Among Hindi speaking states, till now Bihar has been the only state where BJP has not had a Chief Minister. Elections for five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar are to be held on March 16 and Thursday is the last day for filing nominations. Given the current numerical strength in the state assembly, Kumar’s election to the Upper House of Parliament is considered almost certain.
