Desk: The debate on giving Bharat Ratna to Veer Savarkar has started again, in an event RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said that giving this honor to Savarkar will increase the prestige of Bharat Ratna. This comment made at the centenary celebrations of RSS in Mumbai has triggered a heated political debate between Congress and BJP. Opposition parties have expressed strong objection to this demand of Bhagwat.
On RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statement, Congress leader Imran Masood said, “On what basis should Savarkar be given Bharat Ratna? It is a huge honour. Savarkar was the first person who propagated the two-nation theory, which was later adopted by the Muslim League. He formed his government on the same basis and divided united India into pieces.”
Congress leader Hussain Dalwai said, “Savarkar had helped the British government while the Congress was fighting for India’s independence. He was a fascist. How can such a person be given the Bharat Ratna? Mohan Bhagwat should ask the British government to give the ‘British Ratna’ to Savarkar.”
