Guwahati. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi (Priyanka Gandhi Vadra), reacting to the ongoing political controversy in Assam, has targeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said political differences have their place, but targeting a leader’s family and children is “wrong politics”.
Statement regarding allegations against Gaurav Gogoi
In the context of the alleged allegations against Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, Priyanka Gandhi said there are two types of leaders in politics—one who talks on positive issues and the other who tries to polarize the society. He alleged that at present, politics of polarization is being practiced in the state, while the public wants answers on issues related to employment, youth and women.
“It is not right to target the family”
Priyanka Gandhi said that dragging the family of any political leader into controversy is against democratic traditions. “Political fight should be on issues, not through personal attacks,” he said.
Priyanka had come to attend the tribute program
Priyanka Gandhi had come to ‘Zubeen Kshetra’ located in Sonpur on the outskirts of Guwahati to pay tribute to late singer Zubeen Garg. He said Zubeen Garg was “above politics” and his memorial site should not be used for political purposes.
Intensified rhetoric in election environment
This statement has come at a time when Congress is busy preparing for the upcoming elections in the state. The party leadership says that it is serious about strengthening the organization and election strategy in the state.
Raised issues of employment and corruption on the government
Questioning the state government, Priyanka Gandhi said that issues like employment of youth, status of women and alleged corruption should be discussed. He alleged that efforts are being made to divert public attention from real issues.
Amidst the allegations and counter-allegations in Assam politics, Priyanka Gandhi has advised to avoid personal attacks and has said to focus the political debate on issues of public interest. In the election environment, this statement can further heat up the politics of the state.
