Rumors of selling beef led to violent clashes in Sundergarh district of Odisha. Word spread about a meat shop in Regent Market and a man having beef at his home. After this the mob, including members of Bajrang Dal, vandalized the shop, set fire to a pickup van and damaged some vehicles. The dispute escalated rapidly and stone pelting and use of weapons started between the two communities. According to reports, 12 to 20 people were injured in the clash, including policemen.

Police reached the spot and took control of the situation and dispersed both the parties, thereby averting a major accident. The administration took immediate action and imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 in the city and deployed heavy police force. Following the incident, the district administration suspended internet and social media services across Sundargarh for 24 hours to prevent the spread of rumors and misleading messages. Collector Subhankar Mohapatra said that in view of security, all schools, colleges and educational institutions are closed on Friday. Orders have also been given to keep shops closed.

Western Range DIG Birjesh Rai said the police controlled the situation sensitively and major loss was avoided. No serious injuries or deaths have been reported so far, but the tense atmosphere remains. At present, strict restrictions are in place in Sundargarh city and police patrolling has been increased. The administration plans to form a peace committee and discuss further action. People have been appealed to maintain peace and cooperate in law and order. It has been advised not to believe in rumors and stay away from inflammatory content on social media. The situation is now said to be under control, but caution is being exercised.
