The Saudi Arabian government late on Wednesday night announced the appointment of ultra-conservative Islamic scholar ‘Sheikh Saleh bin Fauzan Al Fauzan’ as the country’s new Grand Mufti. 90-year-old Sheikh Saleh Bin Fauzan has been appointed on the recommendation of Saudi King Salman’s son and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Sheikh Saleh was reportedly born on September 28, 1935 in Al-Qassim province of Saudi Arabia. After his father’s death he took Quran lessons from a local Imam. He addressed the Noor Ala Al-Darb or ‘Light the Way’ radio show for a long time. Also wrote many books. His fatwas or religious orders have also been shared on social media. Sheikh Saleh has also faced criticism in the western media for some of his statements.
