A big update has come out regarding America Tariff On India. The US has imposed a total tariff of 50 percent on India, which includes 25 percent general tariff and 25 percent additional penalty tariff. This additional tariff was imposed with the aim of pressurizing India to reduce its purchases of Russian oil. However, now US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant has indicated that this 25 percent additional tariff may be removed.
Scott Besant said in his statement that India has significantly reduced the purchase of Russian oil after the imposition of tariffs. He also said that the additional 25 percent tariff imposed on India is not permanent and there could be a way out for its removal. His statement indicated that if talks between the two countries progress and conditions remain favourable, the US may give tariff relief to India.
Currently, 25 percent tariff was already applicable on India, which was increased to a total of 50 percent. The US, G7 and European countries have also implemented a price cap system on Russian oil, in order to control Russia’s energy income. The US had also earlier warned that if India continues to buy Russian oil, the tariffs could be increased by up to 500 percent.
However, India’s stand is clear that it decides energy purchases on the basis of its national interest and affordable prices. Now it will be important to see what next step America takes regarding America Tariff On India and whether India actually gets relief from additional tariffs or not.
