Tamil Nadu government reached the Supreme Court against lighting lamps in the temple, challenged the order of the High Court

New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear the Tamil Nadu government’s plea challenging the High Court’s order to light the lamps at Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi heard the arguments of the lawyer representing the state government and said that the petition will be considered for listing before a bench.

The Madras High Court had given permission to devotees of the Arulmighu Subramanya Swamy temple to light the traditional Karthigai Deepam located on the Thiruparankundram hill. The stone lamp ‘Deepathoon’ which is to be lit is near a Dargah. There is controversy regarding this only. The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday rejected an intra-court appeal by the Madurai District Magistrate and the city police commissioner and allowed devotees to light lamps. Against which the Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court.
