High Court’s decision upheld, only the collector will decide who will get entry into the sanctum sanctorum.
No VIP in front of Mahakal
Ujjain. The matter of allowing entry of politicians and VIPs into the sanctum sanctorum of Jyotirlinga Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain has now reached the Supreme Court. Earlier this matter was heard in the High Court. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court, while hearing the petition, refused to interfere in the High Court order and rejected the petition. Along with this, the decision of Indore High Court will remain applicable to the Mahakal Temple Committee, in which the Ujjain Collector was given the right to decide who is a VIP and who is not.
In fact, after ban on the entry of common devotees into the sanctum sanctorum of Mahakal temple, Indore’s advocates Charcharat Shastri and Darpan Awasthi had filed a petition in the Supreme Court. It was said in the petition that lakhs of devotees from all over the country reach Ujjain for Mahakal darshan, but they have to do darshan from outside the sanctum sanctorum, whereas leaders and influential people are easily entering the sanctum sanctorum and offering prayers. In the hearing held on Tuesday, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court order in this case and asked the petitioner to approach the High Court.
At present the collector will decide on entry into the sanctum sanctorum.
While hearing the petition filed in Indore High Court about six months ago, the court had made it clear that the Ujjain Collector has the right to decide who will get entry into the sanctum sanctorum. The court said that if the collector allows a person on a particular day, he will be considered a VIP.
The sanctum sanctorum has been closed for two and a half years
In fact, in view of the huge crowd coming in the month of Sawan on 4th July 2023, the sanctum sanctorum of Mahakaleshwar temple was closed till 11th September 2023. At that time the temple committee had said that the sanctum sanctorum would be opened for common devotees as soon as the month of Sawan ends. But after this the sanctum sanctorum is not open. Before Mahakal Lok was built, 20 to 30 thousand devotees used to come to the temple every day. After the formation of Mahakal Lok in October 2022, the number of devotees increased four times to one and a half to two lakhs.
