Woman dies after 11 months of marriage, in-laws accused of killing her by giving her slow poison; 6 arrested

Mumbai The sudden death of 24-year-old Neha Gupta alias Rinki, living in Khar area of ​​Mumbai, has shocked the entire Khar. Khar Police has arrested Neha’s husband Arvind and five of his family members on suspected charges of dowry death. The police are awaiting the FSL results and the final post-mortem report, so the exact cause of death is not yet clear.

Actually, Neha, originally from UP, had an arranged marriage with Arvind (27), a bank employee from Khar, on November 16, 2024. Barely eleven months later, he died untimely. Neha’s death has raised suspicions of domestic abuse and dowry harassment. Neha’s father Radheshyam has lodged a complaint with the police. According to the complaint, Neha’s harassment started just two months after her marriage.

Neha’s father said in the complaint that despite giving a substantial dowry including Rs 9 lakh in cash, 18 tola gold, more than two kilos of silver and several household items, Neha’s in-laws allegedly kept demanding more money and a luxury Bullet motorcycle. When her family refused, Neha was allegedly repeatedly physically and mentally tortured.

In a shocking allegation, Neha’s family has accused her husband and his relatives of slowly killing her by poisoning her. He claimed that Neha was given unknown medicines mixed in her food, due to which she became unconscious again and again. She had often told her parents that she felt mentally unstable and unwell. The complaint further alleges that due to continuous abuse and pressure from her husband’s family, she was forced to undergo abortion.

According to police sources, discrepancies have emerged in the hospital records. On the night of 16 October, Neha was first taken to Bhabha Hospital and later to Cooper Hospital, from where she was discharged at around 4:30 in the morning. However, his condition deteriorated upon returning home. When he was taken back to the hospital, doctors declared him “dead”.

An officer of Khar police station has confirmed that Neha had to endure continuous physical and mental torture at the hands of her in-laws. Police are now waiting for the FSL report and post mortem report to find out whether he died due to poison or some other reason. The police have registered a case under stringent sections of the Indian Penal Code, including section 80 (dowry death), section 123 (causing hurt by means of poisoning) and other sections related to harassment and criminal intimidation. All six accused, including Neha’s husband, are in police custody and investigation is ongoing.
