New Delhi. The Supreme Court has given a very important decision on the right of reservation given to a citizen after religious conversion according to his original religion and caste. The court has made it clear that if a person abandons Hinduism and accepts Islam, he is no longer entitled to the benefits reserved for backward classes by virtue of his old religion or caste.

Madras High Court decision kept and reinstated

The Supreme Court has completely justified the earlier order of the Madras High Court in this case. The High Court had rejected the instructions of the Tamil Nadu government, in which a provision was made to give place to the persons of certain communities in the category of backward class (Muslim) after converting to Muslim religion.

Clear position on the right to religious conversion and reservation

With this important decision of the apex court, the legal position has become completely clear that after conversion, reservation facilities cannot be demanded on the old caste basis. This decision is being considered very important from the point of view of religious conversion as well as the social and legal norms set for the reservation system.
