Bangalore. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Saturday appealed to the new law graduates to uphold justice, protect individual liberty and always remain committed to constitutional values. He said that to achieve success in this legal profession, not only legal knowledge is required but also immense courage, complete honesty and a deep ability to listen to the underprivileged people whose voices often remain unheard in the society.

Addressed the 34th convocation of NLSIU

The Chief Justice was addressing the 34th annual convocation of the prestigious National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, as the chief guest. He said that legal education should not be limited to just bookish or academic knowledge, but its main objective should be to prepare students to deeply understand different ideas and viewpoints and to serve the society selflessly.

Guiding the students, he said, “I am not just congratulating you, but the country also has great expectations from you. The real value of legal education lies in the experience of meeting and understanding the perspectives of people who see the world differently from us.”

Advice on not compromising on principles and avoiding shortcuts

Laying special emphasis on the responsibilities of the legal profession, the CJI made it clear that mere knowledge of laws and court decisions is not enough. Equally important is the unwavering courage to stand in favor of justice and the humility to understand the suffering of those who generally do not receive attention.

He cautioned the new lawyers to never compromise their fundamental principles for the sake of convenience or convenience and to avoid taking any kind of shortcuts in their professional life. He said that this profession is not for the faint of heart, and the role of lawyers is most important in removing injustice in the country, protecting individual liberty and strengthening the values of the Constitution.
