Snowfall in hilly areas, rain and dense fog in plain areas

New Delhi. The weather in the North-West has again deteriorated due to the activation of two more western disturbances. On Monday, there was snowfall in the western Himalayan regions along with light rain in the higher reaches, while in the plains there was cold winds along with drizzle and fog. Although some increase in temperature has been recorded, due to cold wave, more cold was felt. There is a possibility of rain, snowfall and cold wave in these areas on Tuesday also, while in some areas dense fog is expected till February 5.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there was dense fog at some places in Punjab, Haryana, East Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on Sunday night and Monday morning and very dense fog at some places and visibility was recorded less than 50 meters.

Zero visibility was recorded at Sarsawa, Agra and Hindon air force bases in Uttar Pradesh. During this period, light to moderate rain and snowfall also occurred at many places in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh. In the plains states, light to moderate rain occurred at isolated places over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and East Rajasthan.

Snowfall continues on the peaks in Himachal Pradesh. There has been fresh snowfall in the high altitude areas of Kullu, Lahaul and Chamba. One person died when a jeep carrying vegetables slipped on snow and fell under the influence of Manikarna. Atal Tunnel is closed due to heavy snowfall. Rohtang Pass has also received up to 90 cm of snow. At the same time, despite a slight increase in the minimum temperature in Punjab and Haryana, it remains cold due to cold wave. Sirsa was the coldest place in Haryana on Monday, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 6.6 degrees Celsius.

IMD has issued a warning of thunderstorm and lightning in parts of East Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh and Central Maharashtra. The Meteorological Department has appealed to the people to remain alert, especially those working in open areas and fields, have been advised to take extra precautions.
