Varanasi. A dispute between students of two hostels at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) turned violent. PG student Piyush Tiwari was seriously injured in an incident of fighting and stone pelting between students of Ruia Hostel and Birla-C Hostel. He suffered a deep head injury, after which he was referred to the trauma center. After the incident, an atmosphere of tension was created in the entire campus.
According to media reports, eyewitnesses said that at that time around 50-60 students were discussing some issue with the Proctorial Board at the gate of Ruia Hostel. Meanwhile, Piyush Tiwari passed by on a bike. Then he got into an argument with three students of the rare hostel. Within no time the argument turned into a fight, in which Piyush suffered serious head injuries.
As soon as the news of Piyush’s injury spread, the students of Ruia Hostel became angry. Meanwhile, it is alleged that 30-40 students of Birla-C Hostel, some of whom had their faces covered with clothes, ran towards Ruia Hostel with sticks and stones and pelted stones heavily. This sudden attack created chaos in the area.
As soon as the information was received, Lanka police station, BHU outpost in-charge and heavy police force reached the spot. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, DCP Kashi Gaurav himself reached the spot. To control the situation, about 500 policemen, 3 ACPs, forces from 5 police stations, a team PAC and RPF personnel were deployed. Along with this, the entire area was monitored with drones.
The police have surrounded the small hostel from all sides. As part of the search operation, locks of many rooms were broken and investigation was done. During this time, the Proctorial Board of the University was also present on the spot and said to prepare for strict action against the culprits.
The students allege that some expelled students were also involved in the incident, against whom disciplinary action has already been taken. In support of the injured student, the students of Ruia Hostel are demanding immediate arrest of the accused. At present the situation on the campus is under control, but the police and administration are fully alert.
