The wait for a modern budget iPhone appears to be reaching its endgame. Recent supply chain leaks from East Asia suggest that the iPhone SE 4, slated for a late 2026 release, will represent the most significant overhaul in the “Special Edition” history. For years, the SE line has recycled the aging iPhone 8 design, but according to the latest reports, Apple is finally retiring the Home Button and the thick bezels in favor of an all-screen aesthetic that mirrors the iPhone 14 chassis.
The OLED Transition
The most impactful upgrade is the rumored shift to OLED technology. While the SE series has traditionally used LCD panels to keep costs down, the 2026 model is expected to feature a 6.1-inch LTPS OLED display. This move not only brings deeper blacks and more vibrant colors but also marks the final death of LCD in Apple’s smartphone lineup. However, to maintain the price gap between the SE and the flagship iPhone 17, Apple will likely cap the refresh rate at 60Hz, reserving ProMotion for the more expensive models.
USB-C and the European Influence
In compliance with global regulatory shifts—particularly the “Common Charger” mandates in the EU and similar discussions in India—the iPhone SE 4 will officially ditch the Lightning port for USB-C. This transition simplifies the ecosystem for users, allowing them to charge their MacBook, iPad, and iPhone with a single cable. Additionally, the device is expected to feature the Action Button, replacing the traditional mute switch, which can be programmed for shortcuts like the Flashlight, Camera, or Accessibility features.
Internal Power: The A18 Chip
Don’t let the “budget” label fool you; Apple is expected to pack the A18 Bionic chip (the same one found in the standard iPhone 16) into the SE 4. This is a strategic move to ensure the device can support the latest Apple Intelligence features, such as advanced Siri capabilities and on-device photo editing. For the camera, rumors point to a single 48MP rear sensor, a massive jump from the current 12MP, utilizing pixel-binning technology to deliver high-quality low-light shots and 2x “optical-quality” zoom.
Anticipated Pricing
While the upgrades are substantial, analysts predict Apple will aim for a “sweet spot” price of $499 (approx. ₹42,000 to ₹45,000 in India). If Apple manages to keep the price under the 50k mark in India, the iPhone SE 4 could become a dominant force in the mid-range market, offering flagship-level processing power in a modern, refined design.
