LOS ANGELES – In a significant blow to the No. 5 Houston Rockets, superstar forward Kevin Durant was a late scratch for Game 1 of the Western Conference first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night, April 18, 2026.

The 37-year-old veteran is dealing with a right knee contusion after bumping knees with a teammate during practice on Wednesday. Despite being listed as questionable throughout Friday, Rockets head coach Ime Udoka officially ruled him out roughly 90 minutes before tipoff at Crypto.com Arena.
The Nature of the Injury
Coach Udoka described the injury as “very tender” and noted that Durant was experiencing limited movement in the patellar tendon area.
“It’s soreness. It’s tough to bend in certain ways,” Udoka told reporters. “He hit it in a very awkward spot. Pain tolerance is one part, but there’s also limited movement. Hopefully, it’s a one-game thing.”
Durant underwent testing that confirmed the injury is a bruise rather than structural damage, providing some optimism that he could return as early as Game 2 on Tuesday.
Impact on the Series Opener
Durant’s absence removed the Rockets’ leading scorer—averaging 26.0 points per game this season—from a lineup already missing floor general Fred VanVleet (ACL)
-
The Starter: Rookie Reed Sheppard took Durant’s place in the starting five.
-
The Result: The short-handed Rockets struggled to find offensive rhythm, shooting just 37.6% from the field in a 107-98 loss to the Lakers.
-
Lakers Advantage: Despite Los Angeles missing their own stars in Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, the Lakers utilized a career-high 27 points from Luke Kennard and a triple-double performance from LeBron James to secure the 1-0 series lead.
Looking Ahead
The schedule provides a crucial window for Durant’s recovery. With two days off before Game 2, the Rockets’ medical staff is focused on reducing the tenderness in his right knee.
Series Schedule (Lakers Lead 1-0):
-
Game 2: Tuesday, April 21 @ Los Angeles (10:30 PM ET)
-
Game 3: Friday, April 24 @ Houston (8:00 PM ET)
-
Game 4: Sunday, April 26 @ Houston (9:30 PM ET)
For Houston to avoid a 2-0 hole, they will likely need Durant’s 26-point average and veteran spacing back on the floor to counter the Lakers’ physical defensive front.
