India’s artificial intelligence revolution is accelerating at a rapid pace, with the ChatGPT ecosystem witnessing massive adoption across the country. However, a new study by OpenAI highlights a striking trend—usage remains heavily concentrated in urban hubs, with Delhi-NCR emerging as the clear leader in AI adoption.
According to the report, Delhi-NCR has the highest number of ChatGPT users in India, surpassing traditional tech hubs and signaling a broader shift in how AI tools are being embraced across professions.

Delhi-NCR at the Forefront of AI Growth
The study reveals that nearly 50% of all ChatGPT users in India are concentrated in just the top 10 cities, despite these cities accounting for only about 10% of the country’s population.
At the center of this surge is Delhi-NCR, which has recorded the highest penetration of AI usage in the country.
This trend challenges the long-held belief that cities like Bengaluru would dominate AI adoption. Instead, Delhi-NCR’s diverse professional ecosystem—including business, education, media, and government sectors—has driven widespread use of AI tools beyond just developers and tech professionals.
Beyond Casual Use: AI as a Daily Tool
The findings suggest that users in India are not just experimenting with AI—they are integrating it into daily workflows. From coding and data analysis to content creation and problem-solving, AI tools are becoming essential for productivity.
In urban centers like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, ChatGPT is increasingly used for advanced tasks such as programming, research, and decision-making, while in other regions, usage is more focused on education and general queries.
India Emerges as a Global AI Powerhouse
The report also positions India among the world’s leading AI markets, particularly in areas like reasoning, coding, and data analysis.
With over 100 million active users engaging with AI tools, India has become one of the largest markets for generative AI globally.
However, this growth comes with a challenge—AI adoption is significantly more concentrated in major cities compared to countries like the US, UK, Brazil, and Germany, where usage is more evenly distributed.
The “AI Capability Gap”
Experts describe this imbalance as an “AI capability gap”—a divide between early adopters in metropolitan areas and users in smaller towns and rural regions. While top cities demonstrate high-level usage, including complex data analysis and coding, other regions are still in the early stages of adoption.
