EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CA – NASA’s quest to revolutionize air travel reached a pivotal milestone this week as the X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology (Quesst) aircraft successfully completed its second major flight test. This mission, conducted over the high desert of California, serves as a critical step in proving that supersonic flight doesn’t have to be synonymous with the window-shattering “sonic boom” that led to the ban on overland supersonic travel over 50 years ago.
The “Sonic Thump” Challenge
The X-59 is designed with a radical, elongated geometry—featuring a 30-foot nose—that prevents shockwaves from coalescing into the dual thunderclaps typical of supersonic jets. Instead, the air pressure is dispersed, reaching the ground as a muffled “thump,” similar to the sound of a distant car door closing.
During this second test flight, piloted by Jim “Clue” Less, the aircraft pushed further into its “envelope expansion” phase. While the first flight in late 2025 focused on basic airworthiness, this second outing specifically targeted high-speed stability and the performance of the eXternal Vision System (XVS). Because the X-59’s cockpit has no forward-facing window (the long nose blocks the view), the pilot relies entirely on a 4K monitor and augmented reality to see the sky ahead.
Technical Triumph Over Glitches
The path to this success was not without hurdles. A previous attempt in late March was cut short just nine minutes after takeoff when a cockpit warning light—later determined to be a “false positive” from incorrectly installed instrumentation—forced an early return to base. Following a rigorous investigation and recalibration, the flight team cleared the aircraft for this week’s mission, which saw the jet perform flawlessly across its full flight card.
“We are no longer just flying a concept; we are flying the future,” said Cathy Bahm, NASA’s project manager for the Low-Boom Flight Demonstrator. “This second successful flight confirms that our systems are robust and that we are on track to begin community flyover tests by 2027.”
Next Steps: Testing the Public’s Ears
With Phase 1 (Safety and Performance) nearly complete, NASA will soon transition to Phase 2: Acoustic Validation. Later this year, the X-59 will fly over a series of U.S. cities while ground-based sensors and volunteer residents record their perceptions of the sound. This data will be handed to international regulators in hopes of overturning the current ban on commercial supersonic flight over land, potentially cutting cross-country flight times in half for the next generation of travelers.
