Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that granting land rights to tea garden workers in Assam is his government’s way of “repaying a long-standing debt” to the community that has contributed immensely to the state’s economy.
Addressing a public event in Assam, Modi highlighted the historical struggles faced by tea garden workers and said they had waited decades for basic rights, including ownership of the land on which they have lived and worked for generations. According to the Prime Minister, the government’s decision to provide land ownership documents will bring dignity, security, and new economic opportunities to thousands of families.
The initiative is expected to benefit a large number of workers employed in Assam’s vast tea industry. Assam is one of the largest tea-producing regions in the world, and tea garden workers form a significant part of the state’s workforce.
Modi said that with legal land ownership, workers will be able to access government welfare schemes, bank loans, and housing benefits more easily. He added that the move would help improve living standards and empower the community socially and economically.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that the central government and the Assam administration are committed to the welfare of tea garden workers through various schemes related to healthcare, education, housing, and financial inclusion.
Political leaders in the state have reacted to the announcement, with supporters calling it a historic step for the tea worker community while opposition parties have demanded more comprehensive measures to address workers’ long-standing issues.
