Tragedy in Louisiana: Driver Charged After Plowing into Lao New Year Celebration

BROUSSARD, LA — What was meant to be a weekend of vibrant cultural celebration and renewal turned into a scene of chaos and grief as a driver plowed into a crowd during a Lao New Year festival. Local authorities confirmed Monday that a 34-year-old male has been officially charged with multiple counts of vehicular negligent injuring and OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) following the horrific incident that left at least 15 people injured.

A Celebration Shattered

The incident occurred late Sunday afternoon at a local community center where hundreds had gathered for the traditional water throwing and festivities marking the solar new year. According to eyewitnesses, a silver SUV accelerated through a pedestrian-only zone, striking several vendors and families before crashing into a parked trailer.

“One minute there was music and laughing, and the next, people were screaming and running,” said Anoulack Vong, a festival attendee. “It happened so fast; there was no time for people to get out of the way.”

The Investigation and Charges

Broussard Police Chief Jeremy Dupuis stated during a press briefing that the suspect’s blood-alcohol content was significantly over the legal limit at the time of the crash. “This was a preventable tragedy fueled by reckless decisions,” Dupuis said. “Our hearts go out to the Laotian community, who were simply trying to honor their heritage and welcome the new year.”

Of the 15 victims transported to regional hospitals, three remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. The FBI is reportedly assisting local police to ensure there was no bias-related motive, though preliminary evidence strongly points to impaired driving as the sole cause.

Community Resilience and Support

In the wake of the tragedy, the local Laotian-American community has seen an outpouring of support. A makeshift memorial has already begun to grow at the festival site, and a GoFundMe page for the victims’ medical expenses raised over $50,000 in less than 12 hours.

Community leaders have vowed that the incident will not silence their cultural pride. Plans are already underway for a “Healing Vigil” to be held this coming Thursday to honor the injured and pray for their recovery.

Holiday Safety Warnings

The incident has prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to issue a fresh set of warnings as the U.S. enters a heavy month of cultural and religious holidays, including Easter and Passover. Authorities are urging citizens to utilize rideshare services and designated drivers, noting a 12% spike in alcohol-related accidents over the first week of April.
