MOUNTAIN VIEW, April 19, 2026 — In its most aggressive push to integrate artificial intelligence into daily browsing, Google has officially launched “Skills” in Chrome. The new feature, which began rolling out on April 14, allows users to save successful AI prompts as reusable “Skills” that can be triggered instantly across any website or multiple tabs.
The update aims to solve “prompt fatigue”—the friction of repeatedly typing the same instructions into a chatbot. Instead of asking Gemini to “summarize this page” or “calculate the protein in this recipe” every time you visit a new URL, you can now save that workflow once and deploy it with a single click or command.
How Chrome Skills Work
The feature is built directly into the Gemini sidebar in Chrome desktop. Users can create a Skill in two primary ways:

Save from History: After running a successful prompt, a new “Save as Skill” option appears in the chat history.

The Skill Library: Google is providing a library of pre-built “Starter Skills,” such as:

“Document Speed-Read”: Instantly surfaces key clauses and action items from long PDFs or legal pages.

“Protein Maximizer”: Automatically calculates macro breakdowns on recipe sites.

Key Features for Power Users
The most significant technical leap in this update is Multi-Tab Execution. Unlike standard AI extensions that analyze one page at a time, Chrome Skills can be set to run across all active tabs. This is particularly useful for researchers comparing data points from different sources or shoppers looking for the best specs across several retailers

Slash Commands: Users can trigger their saved Skills by typing

For businesses, the “Skills” feature represents a shift toward Standardized Prompting. Companies can encourage teams to use specific “Skills” for data extraction or content enrichment to ensure consistency in outputs.
However, security experts have noted that because Skills often contain proprietary context or customer data, IT departments will need to monitor where these prompts execute. Google has clarified that at launch, the feature requires the browser language to be set to English (US) and is available for free to all signed-in users, with no Gemini Pro subscription required.
