As of April 2026, AI assistants have become our primary tools for everything from coding to personal advice. However, with “AI memory” features becoming the industry standard, your personal data is more persistent than ever. If you want to ensure your brainstorming sessions don’t become part of a model’s future training data, here is how to lock down your privacy.
1. OpenAI (ChatGPT): Use “Temporary Chat”
OpenAI recently introduced a “Temporary Chat” mode across all platforms. Unlike standard chats, these conversations don’t appear in your history, won’t use memory, and—most importantly—aren’t used to train OpenAI’s models.
-
How to Enable: Click on the ChatGPT version selector (top left) and toggle on Temporary Chat.
-
Pro Tip: If you want to keep your history but opt out of training permanently, go to Settings > Data Controls and turn off Chat History & Training.
2. Google Gemini: The “Gemini Apps Activity” Toggle
Google integrates Gemini deeply into Workspace (Gmail, Docs), making privacy even more critical. Google stores your prompts, related product usage, and your location to improve its services.
-
How to Secure: Visit myactivity.google.com and find the Gemini Apps Activity section.
-
The Kill Switch: You can turn off this activity altogether. If you leave it on, set the Auto-delete option to 3 months (the shortest available) to ensure old data is purged.
-
Workspace Privacy: If you use Gemini through a Google Workspace Business or Education account, your data is generally not used for training by default—but check with your IT admin to confirm.
3. Microsoft Copilot: Commercial Data Protection
Microsoft’s privacy depends heavily on whether you are using a personal or enterprise account. For personal users, Copilot behaves much like Bing, using data to refine search results.
-
How to Secure: Use the “Notebook” mode for more private drafting, and regularly clear your search history in the Bing Privacy Dashboard.
-
The Enterprise Shield: If you have a Microsoft 365 business license, look for the “Protected” badge next to your profile. This signifies that “Commercial Data Protection” is active, meaning Microsoft cannot see your data and it is deleted after the session.
4. Universal Rules for AI Privacy
Regardless of the platform, follow these three “Golden Rules” to keep your digital footprint small:
-
Never input PII: Personally Identifiable Information (Aadhaar numbers, passwords, or private bank details) should never be pasted into an AI prompt.
-
Use Local Models for Sensitive Work: For highly confidential business data, consider using local LLMs (like Llama 3 via LM Studio) that run entirely on your hardware without an internet connection.
-
Review “Memory” Regularly: Periodically check the “Memory” or “Personalization” settings in your AI app and delete specific facts you no longer want the AI to remember about you.
