Neuralink has achieved what many considered a medical miracle. On April 7, 2026, Elon Musk’s brain-chip company showcased Kenneth Shock, an ALS patient who can now communicate in real-time using his thoughts alone.
How the “VOICE” Trial Works
Kenneth, who had lost the ability to speak due to the degenerative nature of ALS, received the N1 brain chip in January 2026. The chip’s 1,024 electrodes are implanted in his motor cortex—the area of the brain that plans the movements for speech.

The Process: When Kenneth thinks about saying a word, the N1 chip captures the neural signals and translates them into phonemes (the building blocks of sound).

Synthetic Voice: These phonemes are assembled into full sentences by a computer, which then speaks them out loud using a digital reconstruction of Kenneth’s original voice.
This milestone is part of the ongoing VOICE clinical trial. While still in its early stages, the demonstration proves that Neuralink can successfully bypass physical paralysis to restore one of the most fundamental human abilities: the power to speak.
