The “specs race” in the smartphone world is officially over, according to Nothing CEO Carl Pei. In a series of updates confirmed on April 3, 2026, Nothing is pivoting its resources toward a bold new category: AI-powered smart glasses designed to reduce our dependence on traditional screens.
The Design: Transparent and “Screenless”
True to the brand’s “Transparent” DNA, the upcoming glasses—reportedly codenamed “Project Vision”—will not feature a traditional heads-up display (HUD). Instead, they focus on a “Screenless” philosophy.
-
Audio-First Interface: Using high-fidelity directional speakers, the glasses provide “audio-augmented reality,” whispering translations and notifications directly to the user.
-
Contextual Cameras: Integrated 12MP sensors will use AI to “see” what the user sees, allowing the built-in Nothing AI agent to identify landmarks, read menus, or transcribe meetings in real-time.
Why Carl Pei is Betting Against the Smartphone
In a recent address to employees, Pei noted that the cost of smartphone memory and silicon has become unsustainable in 2026, as mobile brands compete with AI data centers for chips. This “structural shift” is driving Nothing to build an AI-native platform where hardware and software converge in a more affordable, wearable form factor.
“The goal isn’t to replace the phone today,” a company insider noted, “but to ensure you don’t have to pull it out of your pocket every five minutes.”
The Bridge: AI Earbuds (2026)
While the glasses are slated for a late 2026 or early 2027 debut, Nothing is launching a new pair of AI-integrated earbuds later this year. These will serve as the testing ground for the voice-interaction features and “agentic” capabilities that will eventually define the glasses. For the Indian market, where Nothing has a massive cult following, this “multidevice strategy” is expected to breathe new life into a category currently dominated by bulky, screen-heavy devices.
