MISSION CONTROL, HOUSTON – For 56 years, the crew of Apollo 13 held a bittersweet distinction: because their planned lunar landing was aborted, their high-looping emergency trajectory took them farther into the cosmic dark than any human beings before or since. That record finally fell on Monday, April 6, 2026, when the Artemis II Orion capsule surged past the 248,655-mile mark.
By the time the four astronauts reached their “apogee”—the farthest point from Earth—they had reached a staggering distance of 252,756 miles (406,771 kilometers). This new benchmark represents the “High Water Mark” of human presence in the universe.
The Mathematics of the Record
The record was broken as Orion performed a “free-return trajectory” around the lunar far side. Unlike the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 70s, which entered a low lunar orbit, Artemis II was designed as a high-altitude flyby. By swinging approximately 4,067 miles above the lunar surface on the side facing away from Earth, the spacecraft used the Moon’s gravity as a slingshot.
“It is blowing my mind what you can see with the naked eye from the Moon right now,” Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen radioed back to Houston just before the record was eclipsed. “I challenge this generation and the next to make sure this record is not long-lived.”
A Torch Passed
The moment was marked by a poignant tribute from the past. NASA Mission Control beamed up a pre-recorded message from the late Jim Lovell, the Commander of Apollo 13, who passed away in 2025.
“Welcome to my old neighborhood,” Lovell’s voice crackled over the comms. “I’m proud to pass that torch on to you as you swing around the Moon and lay the groundwork for the missions to follow.”
Why Distance Matters
While the mileage is a point of pride, the distance served a critical engineering purpose. At over a quarter-million miles away, the Orion capsule was subjected to the full, unfiltered radiation environment of deep space, testing the spacecraft’s shielding in ways that low-Earth orbit missions cannot.
Furthermore, the extreme distance meant that communication delays reached nearly 1.3 seconds each way—a small but significant lag that the crew had to manage during critical systems checks. As they splash down tonight, they do so not just as astronauts, but as the first humans to have seen our entire planet as a tiny, fragile marble against the infinite black of the true deep.
