Paris, March 28 2026 — India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting being held in Abbaye des Vaux‑de‑Cernay, near Paris. Jaishankar described the interaction as a matter of “honour” and conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warm greetings to President Macron during the discussion.
The bilateral exchange, shared by Jaishankar on social media, was part of an extended diplomatic engagement at the gathering that has drawn foreign ministers from the Group of Seven nations and invited partner countries. India, while not a G7 member, is participating as a partner invitee under France’s presidency of the forum.
Focus on Security and Global Cooperation
At the meeting itself, Jaishankar reiterated India’s stand on key global issues. He emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation for global economic security, a reference that aligns with ongoing concerns about tensions in strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz.
In addition to his meeting with President Macron, Jaishankar held discussions with other counterparts present at the foreign ministers’ session. Notably, he engaged with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to exchange views on the evolving security situation in the Middle East and stressed the need for regional stability and secure global supply chains.
India’s Role in Multilateral Diplomacy
Jaishankar’s active diplomacy at the French‑hosted meeting comes amid a broader push by India to be constructively engaged in major global issues, especially those involving security, economic cooperation, and international law. The G7 gathering this week has been focused on navigating crises in West Asia, maintaining supply chain resilience, and reinforcing cooperation among democracies.
The meeting also reflects the ongoing strategic dialogue between India and France, which have deepened their bilateral cooperation in recent years through regular high‑level engagements and shared interests in defence, technology and regional peace efforts.
