Infrastructure: Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains Redefine Long-Distance Travel

The Indian Railways today celebrated the first full month of operation for the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains on the high-demand Delhi-Mumbai and Bengaluru-Chennai routes. Unlike the existing day-run chair car versions, these new sleeper rakes are designed for overnight journeys, featuring aerodynamic exteriors and interiors that rival European high-speed rail. With a maximum speed of 160 km/h and “jerk-free” semi-active suspension, the trains have reduced the travel time between India’s financial and political capitals to just under 12 hours.

Passenger Experience and Technology The sleeper variants come with automated plug doors, vacuum toilets, and “odor-control” air conditioning systems. A major highlight is the introduction of the “Kavach” 3.0 anti-collision system, which is now standard across all Vande Bharat rakes. Travelers have praised the enhanced soundproofing and ergonomic berth designs, which provide a significantly quieter environment than the traditional Rajdhani Express. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that the occupancy rate for these trains has remained at a steady 98%, prompting the ministry to expedite the production of 50 additional sleeper rakes at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.

The Economic Ripple Effect The success of the Vande Bharat Sleeper has sparked a mini-boom in the domestic manufacturing sector. Over 80% of the train’s components are now made in India, supporting hundreds of MSMEs. Furthermore, the increased frequency of these high-speed links is expected to boost business tourism and professional mobility between Tier-1 hubs. While ticket prices are roughly 10-15% higher than standard 3AC fares, the “time-saving” factor is proving to be a major draw for professionals and families alike. The ministry is now planning to introduce the first “Vande Metro” for short-distance intercity connectivity by late 2026.
