New Delhi: Two Indian-flagged LPG carriers, including the Shivalik, have successfully crossed the strategic Strait of Hormuz following diplomatic talks between India and Iran, according to marine traffic reports and government sources.
The passage comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia, where the safety of shipping lanes has been a growing concern. Officials said the transit was closely monitored to ensure the vessels’ safety, reflecting India’s proactive engagement in protecting its energy supply routes.
External Affairs Ministry sources said the Indian government has been in constant contact with Iranian authorities to ensure smooth passage for Indian ships. The move follows assurances from Tehran that Indian vessels will be allowed to operate safely and that India is viewed as a “friend” in the region.
Industry experts noted that the successful crossing is critical for India’s LPG supply, which is essential for domestic cooking gas distribution and industrial fuel needs. The government continues to monitor the situation to prevent any disruptions to energy imports.
Meanwhile, Indian sailors on the vessels reported no incidents during transit, though authorities remain cautious given the proximity to conflict zones. The Ministry of Shipping has reiterated that India’s maritime safety protocols are being strictly followed to protect personnel and cargo.
