Microsoft has officially signaled the end of the road for Outlook Lite, announcing that the application will be retired on May 25, 2026. Launched in 2022 to serve users with entry-level Android devices and limited network connectivity, the app will lose all functionality on the shutdown date, leaving millions of users needing to migrate.
Why the Shutdown?
Microsoft is consolidating its mobile email strategy around the flagship Outlook Mobile app. While Outlook Lite was praised for its small 5MB size and low battery consumption, the standard app has since been optimized to run better on mid-range hardware. Microsoft stated that the move allows them to provide a “unified experience” with more robust security, better compliance features, and deeper integration with Microsoft 365 services.
What Users Need to Do
After May 25, users will still be able to open the Lite app, but it will be unable to sync emails, access calendars, or download attachments. Microsoft has provided an in-app “Upgrade” option that guides users to the Play Store to download the full version. All existing data—including emails and folders—is stored in the cloud and will be instantly available upon signing into the standard Outlook app.
