Pixel 10 Pro Fold: Leaks reveal a thinner hinge and the first-ever IP68 water resistance for a Google foldabl

Google is set to redefine the durability standards for foldable smartphones with the upcoming Pixel 10 Pro Fold. While previous generations were often criticized for their fragility, latest leaks and official documentation from the “Laguna” project suggest a massive engineering overhaul focused on two key areas: a revolutionary gearless hinge and industry-leading environmental protection.

The Gearless Hinge: Slimmer and Smarter

Traditional foldables rely on complex gear systems that occupy significant internal space and create multiple failure points. According to leaked schematics, Google has swapped this for a fluid friction gearless hinge made from aerospace-grade stainless steel.

This new design allows the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to achieve a remarkably thin profile of just 5.2mm when unfolded. By removing the bulky gear assembly, Google has also managed to shrink the internal bezels, making room for a larger 8.0-inch Super Actua Flex display without increasing the phone’s overall footprint. The hinge is reportedly rated for over 10 years of folding (approx. 300,000 cycles) without mechanical degradation.

A First for Foldables: IP68 Protection

The most significant breakthrough is the IP68 rating. While competitors like Samsung have achieved IPX8 (water-resistant but not dust-rated), the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is tipped to be the first foldable to offer full dust-tight protection.

Google achieved this by using specialized micro-sealing and a “vacuum-like” internal chamber that prevents fine particles from entering the hinge mechanism. This means users no longer have to worry about pocket lint or beach sand “gumming up” the folding action—a common pain point for early adopters.

The Performance and Charging Leap

Beyond durability, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will debut with the Tensor G5, Google’s first chip manufactured by TSMC. This move is expected to fix the thermal issues of past models, allowing the foldable to maintain high performance during multitasking.

Additionally, the leak confirms the inclusion of “PixelSnap”, Google’s take on Qi2 magnetic charging. This allows the foldable to snap onto magnetic stands and chargers even when fully unfolded, solving the awkward charging alignment issues that have plagued large-screen foldables in the past. With a rumored price of $1,799, Google is clearly positioning this as the most “no-compromise” foldable on the market.
