The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) has officially announced the launch of the LOTUS Programme 2026, a prestigious international initiative aimed at deepening academic and scientific ties between Japan and India. For this cycle, the Government of Japan has extended an invitation to 1,000 Indian PhD scholars and young researchers to engage in high-impact joint research projects at Japan’s leading universities and national research institutes.

Focus Areas for 2026

The LOTUS (Long-term Opportunity for Trainees from University and Schools) programme is designed to address global challenges through bilateral innovation. For the 2026-27 session, the JST has prioritized the following “Frontier Technology” sectors:

  • Artificial Intelligence & Quantum Computing

  • Semiconductor Design and Manufacturing

  • Green Hydrogen & Sustainable Energy Solutions

  • Advanced Biotechnology & Personalized Medicine

  • Space Technology & Satellite Communication

Scholarship Benefits and Coverage

Selected candidates will receive comprehensive financial support, making it one of the most generous research fellowships available globally. The package includes:

  • Full Round-trip Airfare: Economy class travel from India to Japan.

  • Monthly Stipend: Approximately 150,000 to 200,000 Yen (depending on the research level) to cover living expenses.

  • Research Grant: Access to laboratory funds and specialized equipment.

  • Accommodation Support: Assistance in securing university housing or private apartments.

  • Medical Insurance: Full coverage for the duration of the research stay in Japan.

Eligibility and Application Timeline

To be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled in a PhD programme at a recognized Indian university or hold a research position (Junior Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow). Proficiency in English is required, while basic knowledge of the Japanese language is considered an added advantage but not mandatory.

How to Apply

Interested researchers must submit their proposals through the official JST-LOTUS Portal. The application requires a detailed Research Plan, a Recommendation Letter from their Indian supervisor, and an “Acceptance Letter” from a host professor in Japan.

This programme is a cornerstone of the “India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership,” offering Indian scholars a unique platform to work with world-class infrastructure and contribute to the global technology landscape.
