Meta Cracks Down on Cyber Scams: Over 1.5 Lakh Instagram and Facebook Accounts Banned

In a major action against online fraud, Meta Platforms has banned more than 1.5 lakh accounts from its platforms, including Instagram and Facebook. The move is aimed at curbing large-scale cyber scam networks operating primarily from Southeast Asia.

Global Operation Targets Scam Networks

The crackdown comes after an intensive operation conducted over several days, focusing on organized cybercriminal groups involved in online fraud. These networks have been responsible for financial losses and emotional distress for victims across multiple countries.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with several international agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice, and Thailand’s Anti-Cyber Scam Center (ACSC), along with other global law enforcement bodies.

Arrests and Strict Action

As part of the crackdown, around 21 individuals have been arrested and sent to jail, highlighting the seriousness of the action. Authorities targeted networks operating in countries such as Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos, where large-scale scam centers are reportedly active.

How These Scams Operate

According to Meta, these cybercriminal groups function like organized enterprises. They use structured teams, scripted conversations, and targeted strategies to deceive users. Advanced systems are also used to avoid detection, making these scams difficult to track.

Victims—especially from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Asia-Pacific regions—have been heavily impacted, facing both financial losses and loss of trust in digital platforms.

Ongoing Efforts to Ensure Safety

Meta emphasized that tackling cyber fraud is an ongoing effort that requires continuous collaboration between tech companies and law enforcement agencies worldwide. The company stated that such partnerships are essential to ensure users feel safe while using online platforms.

Restoring User Trust

Cybercrime not only causes economic damage but also affects users’ confidence in digital ecosystems. With this large-scale action, Meta Platforms aims to strengthen platform security and rebuild trust among its global user base.

The crackdown signals a strong message: social media platforms are stepping up efforts to fight cybercrime and protect users from increasingly sophisticated online scams.
